The TX taken apart

Soon after the TX was released, 1src members began to think about ways to make it run faster. Of course, overclocking was one of the first things planned and actually is said to work decently well.

Soon, people began to wonder if Palm actually used a 312MHZ version of the CPU or if it was really selling a 400MhZ CPU clocked down to 312. This would have been entirely possible-but it is wrong.

The PalmInsider boys have managed to take apart a TX and posted images online here:
One of the images designates the CPU as an Intel PXA270C5C312. Thus, it is now pretty clear that we are dealing with a 31w2 MhZ CPU and thus probably wont reach the values that we had on our T5's.

Last but not least, I have an old 2004 set card from Silica-a semiconductor distributor. They state a per-CPU price of 21.40€ for the 312, 24.25€ for 416MhZ and 33.95 for the 520 MhZ version. These prices are valid for 10k units!

What do you think?

Remember though, that when processors are developed, they are often still remarked versions of the same processor. There is a chance that they may be from a less perfect die, which accounts for them being clocked lower, but in fact, they could also be the same quality as the more powerful processors. It really depends on how good the manufacturing is. The fact that it is a "312" processor means nothing in regards to its full potential. We will have to see. When we have some users overclock their units, we will know how high they can actually go.

"wont reach the values that we had on our T5's."

What's that nonsense?

The T|X reacts NOTICEABLY faster than the T5 on user interaction!

Who cares then if the CPU is running faster or slower???

Before commenting on the speed of the T|X, you should use one for yourself for a while and not again copy opinions of other freaks...

my dear friend: same question back to you!

We are not comparing OS speed and reaction speed here. What we are comparing here is dead simple:

RAW CPU cycles/second

Please feel free to leave productive comments!

Still nonsense!

What does raw cpu cycles tell about device speed?

IIRC someone named TamHam annoyed the world not long ago with his statements tha a Palm IIIc is all everybody might need as PDA.

Well, THAT must be a reliable source of information ;-)

I really have the feeling that you dont get it:

We dont want to talk speed increase or anything here. All we want to do is increase clock.... get it? If yes, good. If not, I can't explain it even more... .

What you say is true for different CPU architectures. But lets skip out on this, you apperently dont use your handheld for videos or Quake!

About the name: it is really easy to abuse someone's name, isnt it? And, you gotta at least try to get my name right. Anyways if you are referring to the discussion about IIIc vs m505-please keep the state of my right eye in mind!

Anyways, leaving behind a name is good to increase credibility!

So.... - you don't talk speed increase but you talk clock increase...

You may be right - i don't quite get it.

Tam: don't bother fighting with him/her/it/watever. Why waste the time and effort?

Those time can be put in better use by writting more good articles on PDA stuff.

Tam hanna why would you want to overclock if you're not looking for a speed increase. Thats essentially what its for. Video playblack quality, or lack there of, is a drawback of the OS and the amount of RAM in the pda. Increasing clock speed will have very little effect.
