Domain name scam-domain owners, beware

Daniel Gray just reports that there is an ongoing domain scam.
A company is busily sending out letters to domain owners about how their domain will expire soon. It then proceeds to ask them to renew their subscription-for an incredibly high price.
Find more about it at his website:

Did you ever find something like that in your mail box? I didnt find it, yet!

I work at an ISP in Canada, and we are always seeing customers fooled by these letters. And when they want to transfer their domain back to the original registrar, they have to pay even more to do so!

it really only catches people who dont know what they are doing in regards to owning a domain name.

General rule is that if you don't know what you are doing, you should find someone who does to help you, otherwise you will cause tremendous hurt or suffer tremendous financial loss. I've gotten these scams, and just delete them as the spams they are.

I've gotten many of these. Between all the companies I am involved with, I may be related to about 10 domain names. I have probably gotten about 4-6 of these letters in the last 2 or 3 years.
The letters definitely look very official. Most of the ones I have gotten come with an American Flag printed on them.
It can be confusing even for someone who is familiar with the web. The wholesaling by registrar's is certainly confusing if you don't deal with it regularly.
