The new PIMs on old Palms

Surely you have noticed that all new PalmOne-PDAs use the PIM-applications "Calendar, Contacts, Tasks" and "Memos" instead of "Address" and so on. Introduced with Tungsten T3 and Tungsten E, you can even add a birthday and a website in "Contacts", use colours to differentiate categories in "Calendar" and write notes with up to 32 KBytes in "Memos".

Did you ever wonder if these applications can be runned on other palms? I thought that they'll run on all palms with Palm OS 5.x. But as you can see on the pictures they even run on old palms like IIIc running Palm OS 4.1, even on Alphasmart Dana! Also the applications "Favourites", "Files" or "Prefs" have no problems with this old 68k operating system. "Favourites" can save 4 x 8 applications, web pages or files and was introduced with the Tungsten T5. "Files" is included with every PalmOne-handheld with an integrated flash memory or hard disk and is a file management tool. The "Prefs"-application is nothing special but has another design, introduced with Palm OS 5.2. And even VersaMail until version 2.6 will run on Palm OS 4.

In the next part of this article you can read how to copy those applications on YOUR palm !

You and me both, Mitchel. :)
I loved my m130 until the back crumbled apart-twice. :(
Ya just can't carry a handheld with an exposed circuit board.
But I digress.

This news is awesome!
I run several apps written for other Clies on my TH55.
I do not use Clie Agonizer, but standard PalmOS PIMs, with the exception of DB5.

It's a great thing to tweak your handheld with some customizations, and spruced up newer versions of the standard PIMs are PERFECT for folks running older models.+

Everybody likes to freshen up a piece of hardware, especially when it's really being used over the long haul.

The ability to "mess around" with this kind of stuff is what brought me to PalmOS handhelds in the first place.
Great work!

Interesting, I've done this with the Treo 650 PIM on the simulator to the Treo 600 on the simulator and it worked there, here is what I did:
http://www.shadowmite.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=127

Theres still a few rough edges such as no background support, but oh well. After using a Zire 31 with the enhanced PIM I prefer Agendus anyway.

Didn't know it would work on older PalmOS 3,4 devices, so good work.

Wow, nice, and I just got Notepad from my old IIIxe to run, in color, on my Zodiac 2, but I wonder, if we can get these PIMS to work on older and newer devices, Can I get Graffiti 2 to work on my IIIxe. Sure I may be good at 1, but I haven't used it for so long I am used to 2. I would also like to try this out on my Zodiac with these enhanced PIMs and my IIIxe. Please email me the files, and If you need one from me I'll send it to you. ydjk58 [at] nospam gmail.com

No, we won't send any files because they are not freeware. You'll have to have a Palm with this files, or you can use the T3 / E simulator, see http://pluggedin.palmone.com. You can read how to copy and how to install etc. in the next part of this article.

And if I forgot to write in the article - this files will NOT work with OS 3.5, you need at least OS 4.0.

Hi James,
just do it like I did.
Get yourself a SD card with at least 20Meg of free space and a reset pin. Install McFile and FileZ to the card. Walk with it to a test device or sth else, and just do a "ROM Dump" to your SD card with the programs mentioned(FileZ is not so good at it, but I didnt try McFile yet for this)!
The dumping may crash every now and then, but then you just have to skip a file or two!
Best regards

I've been able to get them on my Zire71 but haven't gotten them to sync and no photo support in contacts (even though I took files from a Zire72) :(

Any help as to how to sync and contact pictures would be greatly appreciated!

So where on earth is the second part of the article? Are you still planning on publishing it? I've scoured the web for precise instructions, and I've tried replicating them on various palm simulators, but can't get them to work properly. I don't want to risk messing up my T|C, a simulator is easier to hard reset :)

Oh, now I see your comment, sorry!

The next part of the article is written - but their are some problems, which could crash your palm, yes, you even could have to do a hard-reset! I miss some files in the simulator, and they HAVE to be there but they aren't. On every other palm they would crash but on the original T|T3 and T|E they don't. Another problem is that they the Zire 72/31 version will crash if you try to beam a vcard (contacts). And the T5 uses other program files.

So the article has to be re-written. I'll start today - and you can read the second part soon!

Kind of annoying the blog-ware doesn't capture the DATE along with the time stamp - kind of useless - "what do you think?"

Hi,
I am very sorry, but I dont have any access to the blogware's internal implementation!
Anyways, the updated article is already online for quite some time! Look it up in the archives!!
