Outlook+Hardreset=ouch

Recently, the catastrophe happened. I hardreset my T3 and syncronized it with Outlook the first time. Synced ok, but no contacts, etc on the machine. So, hotsync again-and alas, all contacts, etc were gone once and for all(in outlook).
Dispair, as I lost a few meetings-but no total catastrophe. I luckily had back-upped my .pst file every now and then on a CD-RW. So I reimported everything and found out that I only lost a few mailing list contacts that could be recreated easily.
So, here is a litle intro into backing up your outlook data and other stuff that you may need in your life:
a)Get a CD-RW
CD-RW's can be written on many, many times. They do not cost much more than a regular CD-R, but can be used up to 1000 times!
b)Locate your pst files.
This actualy is the hard part. Outlook saves all your data in a so-called personal storage file which is hidden somewhere in the filesystem. In order to determine where the file is, you need to right-click it in the folder tree. Then, you have to click on Properties and then on Advanced. Alas, here is the path to your pst file.
c)Burn the file to a CD-RW-and do it often
Many people tend to see this part as easy-but it actualy is the hardest of the four, as it envolves an enormemous amount of discipline. Clicking the burn button is an easy thing to do, but clicking it once a day?
I have almost lost my data now, and already lost all of it once.- So, keep backing up, dudes!

Well, my first thought was "Serves you right for using LookOut." But that's probably not productive.

I've had this hit people that I knew. The main reason they had the problem was that they didn't go into the Palm conduit options and say "desktop overwrites handheld."

Apple's iSync conduit, while slow, has the ability to roll back to a previous sync.

A good application for backing up a system is the Unison File Synchronizer:

I have a spare hard drive (setup with its own OS) that I use to effectively mirror my current hard drive. If I need to do a quick swap then I'm in sync.

(BTW, you can get Unison for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and various BSD ports!)

Hi,
my backup prodecure has one big advantage. the CDRW is moved out of the burner after backup-so a virus cannot damage it under any circumstances. Now imagine a virus formatting your backup HDD!

P.s. You have a cool way....

Re: virus on your backup HDD

Hey, if you aren't practicing safe computing, you can burn a virus onto a CD Rom just as easily as you can get it on your backup HDD. I've seen folks do it!

Every computer should have a software firewall (such as ZoneAlarm
and an anti-virus application that's kept up to date (such as the free antivirus software from GriSoft. Even then, you can't open email attachments unless you already know they're safe (even if they're from someone you know). Oh, yeah, and one or more of the various spyware removal tools also.

I maintain over a dozen computer myself and am careful and paranoid enough to have never caught a virus. Unfortunately, it sometimes seems like it's a full-time job, but it's the cost of supporting an unsecure environment like Microsoft Windows (whoever decided that user mode applications should be able to access API's that give them system privileges should be hung out to dry!).

Hi Anonymous,
thank you for pointing this out. good advice.
However, I have a pretty safe router and an AV program!
