Memory card bingo-1GB or 2x512Meg

Recently a user raised the following question on a german forum:
Which kind of memory card should I get - two or one of double capacity?
This is indeed a pretty popular question now that memory card prices have fallen so low. Most wannabe experts have only one answer get the biggest one you can get. At first, this answer is obvious:the latest cards have cutting-edge controllers and thus deliver ernormous data rates. In addition, you should always get the best tech you can afford.
However, I have painfully learnt to feel different about this and also about the importance of backups for a programmer. I am dependant on my Palm OS handhelds-if it fails, I can no more work efficiently. Same thing valid for my SD card-imagine the whole SDK, the ebooks and everything elso going down the drain. Or, imagine a crazy programmer vitriolicly erasing all my programs and also formatting my SD card-thanks to Anton Tomov we are now familiar with this kind of thing, too. Or think of an ordinary hard reset, improper card removal,... .
To cut a long story short-I always like to have 2 memory cards that are totally independant of one another. I would like to have one card only for storing backups and other vital data(64MB is enough for my T3, as my backup program can compress...). The second card would be used for storing files and all the stzuff that I work on daily or that is amusing(stupid movies, stupid photos(e.G. the No-Palm house),...).
Next issue-speed. The big diffwerence of nowaday controllers is all about writing data. Writing data, get it? No problem with having nice data rates when reading(except some SanDisks)-my ole Hama 64MB SD performs lovely and reads at least 2MB-which is about the biggest file that I tend to load into memory contiguously(oggs are read sequencially, and so are movies)...
So, to get to an end: when buying memory cards-keep in mind that bigger isn't automatically better! Feel free to discuss your ideas here!

Also, I've read somewhere that 1gb cards, like the Extreme III, can't be written to by all cardreaders. I don't have a big card yet myself, but I would like to know if this is true before I buy it.

Bart I have heard the same. Tam I came here after reading about your site on Palm Addicts. One thing you could do to improve your site is be a little more original. Try not to copy what other sites have posted, GSM phone coverage (there was nothing that could have been read on Brighthand) and add some of your own thoughts and opinions. Learn from sites such as Palm Addicts, Brighthand, Palminfocenter etc as these are the big Palm websites. If your site is going to be big, ask these people how they started, read everything they write (do not copy). Initially you have a good site but at the moment it is not enough to keep me coming back unless Sammy and the guys at Palm Addict post a interesting link to your site. I look forward to seeing how things develop, keep the site going but learn from those that have succeeded.

Tam, I find the previous post interesting. You have a fine blog here. However, I find exception with the criticism that you need more original items. Palm Addict is probably my favorite Palm site. By far the majority of the items on Palm Addict are items from other sites or postings about application updates that anyone can find at freewarepalm or Palmgear. Original content there is very limited unless Sammy posts editorials or someone writes in about personal experiences. Is this bad? No. It is one stop shopping. Your blog has room and time to grow. I think you are doing a great job. Items like your Memory Card article are what will personalize your blog. Do the "big boys" get direct information? Yes, but when you look at 1src and the others, much of their content is also re-posts. Keep up the good work, and take posts like the previous one with a grain of salt.

I agree totally with the previouis post. I too like Tams site and yes I agree Palm Addict is the best Palm site. (Love the term "one stop shopping") Tam your site is great, lots of readers would love this site. I had a blog for over a year (had to give it up due to ill health) and Sammy over at Palm Addict gave mention to it when I had new news. Send him an email once in a while and I know he will be happy to post. (he is a nice guy) You have a great site, keep up the good work. There are lessons to learn from sites that have made it. Listen to advice people give and your site will only get even better, now thats a good compliment. Keep up the good work Tam.

Hi,
thank you all for the long and detailled feedback. Indeed, I know now that the 3GSM got way to much attention-I should have only done an overview and emphasized more con comments... .
Regularily, TamsPalm has been zupdated every two days-but the one-day schedule I am running at now has been indeed putting me into severe logistical problems which should be solved by now!
Something else to you all: I have finisched my first program LedManager a few days ago, and thus learned a huge lot asbout software enigneering, etc. All this knowledge is sitting in the back of my head and is waiting to get published-so keep your head tuned.
Something else: TamsPalm tries to have as much new information as possible, but there also is an emphasition on connecting the german and the rest of the PalmUserWorld. Thus, german users will find lots of stuff here that they already know, but which may be entirely now for americans, etc!
Last thing for today:I am currently learning PHP and HTML(as my time permits, sorry but I also have scholar work and need to keep my health in check). What this will lead to-be waiting!
Best regards
Tam Hanna
P.s. Do you want to contribute to TamsPalm? New writers are gladly accepted!

I've purchased a 1 gig card and I use it in my camera, mp3 player, and T3, I run a backup of it every night. My camera was the only thing that had a hitch with it, I had to format it in the camera and then it ran like a top in all three. I love it.

Hi you all,
I am currently planning to buy a new SD card for my handheld too-but 1GB is simply too expensive and also too much for me-I am very happy with 64 and only want it as a music storage when I am on a vacation-I feel that I will settle with 256 or 512MB!
Something else-thank you all once again for the comments. What else can I improve, what do you think about having a few title images?
Best regards
Tam Hanna

If you want to use the card for music then get the 512Mb size card.
I bought the 256Mb card for music (i thought it was big enough)
The prize difference is not that big.

Thank you for giving my mail to Google for creating Gmail account

I wil check you're site on a daily basis
